SACRAMENTO, CALIFORNIA - May 8, 2007 -- California Association of Sheet Metal and Air Conditioning Contractors National Association (California SMACNA) presented the 2007 Tom Guilfoy Memorial Craftsmanship of the Year Award to Air Systems, Inc. in San Jose, CA. Their project was the Harborwalk Condominiums in Oakland, CA. They received a 30" x 40" framed architectural photo of the project.

The Tom Guilfoy Memorial Craftsmanship of the Year Award is presented annually for a project where attention to detail and expertise is critical and exemplifies the teamwork among sheet metal workers and contractors, as well as contractors and owners.

This project was designed by MV&P International and features metal wall siding, soffits and roofing panels.

Air Systems' staff worked hand-in-hand with the owner and other craftsmen in the field to get the job coordinated while working in a small space with no storage for the materials and tools. A courtyard crane had to be used to lift all roofing materials, the company had to take field measurements for all siding areas prior to the release of fabrication, and all siding work had to be installed off scaffolding, which had to be removed to complete the concrete work and landscaping. There were multiple crews working in extremely tight areas. Challenges included a superintendent change mid-stream; an original schedule of December 2004 until October 2005 with the actual start date of the metal siding not until October 2005, which extended the work until April of 2006.

This project required 9,518 field hours using journeymen and apprentices from Local 104. Of those hours, 2,855 were due to change orders and 2,805 were overtime work. Due to the extremely wet year, 22 days were lost to rain delays for a 30% production loss.

The Tom Guilfoy Memorial Craftsmanship Award Selection Committee selected this project due to the tremendous amount of coordination with other trades, the owners and the timelines needed to get the project completed.
